Various types of samples (see graphic) can be examined at BESSY II. Researchers from Germany and abroad must apply to BESSY II for measurement time. An international panel of experts then selects the most promising projects. This procedure ensures a high quality of the scientific work. The results are published in scientific journals.

BESSY II thus contributes to the continuous growth of knowledge in many socially relevant fields, including energy, climate, materials and health research. Measured by the number of publications, BESSY II has an enormous scientific output.
